Wildlife

From the Colorado Division of Wildlife.  October 2008

"Tips for coexisting with coyotes:  If you see a coyote, use common sense.  Never approach them.  Observe them from a distance and help keep them wild.  In order to avoid conflicts with coyotes, and other urban wildlife, we recommend the following:

  • Protect your pets!  Do not allow your pets to roam, especially at night.  We suggest a least a 6' fence.

  • Do not allow dogs to run with coyotes. Coyotes can turn on dogs to defend their territory.

  • Keep pet on a leash.  Wild animals must hunt for a living and see no difference in prey wearing a collar and other wild creatures.  Dogs at large will also cause coyotes to behave defensively to protect their den and pups.

What should you do if you encounter a coyote?

  • Keep your pets on leashes.

  • Do not approach coyotes.

  • Throw rocks or sticks to frighten the coyote away, if it approaches you or your pet.

  • Do everything you can to make the coyote feel unwelcome in your presence.

  • Use a loud, authoritative voice to frighten the animal.

  • Do not run.

If you would like more information on coyotes, you can contact the Colorado Division of Wildlife.  Mon.-Fri. 8am-5pm 303-291-7227. Or visit the Colorado Division of Wildlife web site."
